What is Flash Sterilization?

Have you ever heard about Flash sterilization? This words seems very quick and fast, right? Let’s continue reading and understand what is flash sterilization.

Flash sterilization normally is the sterilization of an unwrapped object at 132°C for 3 minutes at 27-28 lbs. The time required for flash sterilization depends on the type of sterilizer and the type of item.

Flash sterilization is a modification of conventional steam sterilization,  which means the flashed item is placed in an open tray or  in a specially designed, covered, rigid container to allow for rapid penetration of steam. So it’s not recommended as a routine sterilization method.

Flash sterilization is considered acceptable for processing cleaned patient-care items that cannot be packaged, sterilized, and stored before use. so it should not be used for reasons of convenience, as an alternative to purchasing additional instrument sets, or to save time. And because of the potential for serious infections, flash sterilization is not recommended for implantable devices. If flash sterilization of an implantable device is unavoidable, recordkeeping is essential for epidemiological tracking and for an assessment of the reliability of the sterilization process.

So now do you understand what is Flash sterilization? I hope these information help you improve your knowledge.
